The dramatic Sonoma Coast AVA runs from the northern edge of Marin County all the way up to the southern border of Mendocino County. The direct influence of the Pacific Ocean keeps this region cool and foggy-the ideal climate for distinctive Burgundian varietals. This Chardonnay comes from a spot on the Sonoma Coast where Goldridge soils are so well drained that vines must take deep root in search of water and nutrients. This helps temper vine vigor to ensure concentrated varietal character in the grapes. One-third of this wine was fermented and aged in a concrete egg to enhance its bright minerality; the balance was barrel fermented and aged on the lees in 100% French oak (1/3 new). The lees were stirred twice a week-batonnage-to help build the beautiful texture that balances this wine's vibrant acidity and minerality. The Sonoma Coast experienced optimum growing conditions in 2013. A cold winter with no hard frost led into an ideal spring, for even berry set. Over the long summer, the warm days were tempered by the region's characteristic cool marine winds and fog, extending the growing season for slow, even ripening of Chardonnay grapes.
2012 Naked Winery "Foreplay" Rogue Valley, Oregon Chardonnay 750 mL
Manufacturer: Naked Winery
Brand: Naked Winery
After two vintages with some of the coolest temperatures on record, 2012 presented us with warm, consistent weather. The dry summer produced fruit of a rich full character in a perfect tension with acidity. The heat units allowed ever so slightly higher alcohol levels.
2012 Rippon Gewürztraminer Wine, Central Otago - Lake Wanaka 750 mL
With maturing vines and the first really favorable year for Gewürztraminer since 2003, this wine speaks with real accuracy & pride of place. This along with slow, whole bunch pressings, wild ferment and extended lees contact has resulted in a wine which is defined by remarkable grace and clarity.
