Vintage 2015 kicked off with a mild winter and early spring that jumpstarted the growing season in Eastern Washington. Couple that with the hottest summer on record and the result was the earliest harvest start to date. Three weeks earlier than average, bud break occurred on the 20th of March and we were already enjoying consistent daily highs in the mid 70's. Like 2014 the heat built quickly from there and by mid-May we saw our first day over 100 degrees. Summer was dry and hot, the hottest on record and with that harvest arrived, as we picked the first of our Chardonnay on August 26th As we rolled into September, the summer heat gave way to a wonderfully dry and warm fall that carried us through till harvests end on October 26th. That cooling trend allowed our reds extra hang time to develop and refine tannin structure and deepen flavor profiles.
Tradition. Italian. Family. Tradition, Italian, and Family: these are the foundation of Apolloni Vineyards and its winemaking. The label is inspired by an original piece with its origins dating back to the 16th century. It depicts the Apolloni family coat of arms, featuring a black eagle as a sign of strength, as well as the helm from the armor of the captains of Scalve. The handwriting in the background documents the origins of the coat of arms from the Milan State archive. The lettering of the name, Apolloni, is Roman, always in bold capitals. The Apolloni family's Italian origins are from the Arezzo region in Tuscany, Italy, and has a long tradition in winemaking of over 150 years. History and tradition have always been important and continue to be. Alfredo Apolloni, a first generation American, comes from a long line who have taken pride in retaining their family name. In each generation there has been either an Adolfo or an Alfredo, alternating by generation. Alfredo has continued the tradition by naming his son Adolfo, in honor of his late father.

The grapes that produced this wine are from the best regions that California has to offer. The fruit benefits from warm sunny days and cool nights as a result of gentle breezes coming from the Pacific Ocean. This allows the fruit to mature and have a proper balance between fruit character and structure. The fruit for this wine was harvested at a point where it was mature and balanced so as to produce a wine that is complex and not overpowered by any one component. The grapes were crushed, pressed, and cold settled. Fermentation of the clarified juice was conducted in stainless steel vessels and the fermentation was kept at 55 degrees in order to maintain the fresh fruit characters of the wine. The wine was then blended and allowed the various components to integrate a produce the crisp fresh fruit driven wine before you.

Father/daughter winemaking team, Mike and Natalie, have made several roseÌs in the past, but they were bottled under the Spokane Blush label. They have wanted to do this for some time but didn't because they lacked a consistent source of red grapes to devote to a RoseÌ program. That has changed as Mike and Natalie have expanded their grape contracts with vineyards in the Ancient Lakes AVA to include additional tonnages of both Malbec and Merlot. For this vintage, the berries were really heavy so the amount of juice per berry was higher than normal. The juice was then left on the skins for 3 hours to get a bit of color. Mike and Natalie then fermented the wine as they would their white wines; cold fermentation, which is around 45º-50º. Before bottling, a touch of Muscat Canelli was added to soften the edges.
Centuries ago the Castle was the center of village life. Although hard work occupied the day from sunup to sundown, the long nights allowed ample time for relaxation. Sweetness was highly prized, and wine was one of the few ways to preserve the "Sweet Nectar of the Gods". The Castle Blush was said to be a compromise between Damsels & Knights, Kings & Queens, Young & Old. A wine to please them all, where all went to bed happy.

2015 was the fourth year of draught in California. The vineyards bloomed early in the warm, dry spring leading to early ripening and an August harvest. Through careful management of what little water was available, our vineyards produced small, but flavorful and intensely colored fruit.
